In the application of contemporary electronic shell materials, if there is a material with the most applications, polycarbonate deserves to be the “king of engineering plastics”.
It has particularly good impact resistance, thermal stability, gloss, bacterial inhibition and anti-pollution, and has a wide range of operating temperatures (-60~120°C), which is widely used in the design of electronic product shells, especially for outdoor products.

The impact strength of PC is particularly high, it has excellent mechanical properties, a wide range of temperature (-60 to 120 °C), especially the excellent outdoor weather resistance (there is a weather resistance and anti-aging grade), so it is widely used in the shell materials of products that need to have impact resistance and outdoor use, such as three-proof products, military products, automotive industry, etc.

“Strong transparent material”

There are colorless and transparent models, the transmittance of visible light is close to 90%, good dimensional stability, good electrical insulation, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, high surface hardness, not easy to scratch and fluffing, and can be applied to outdoor curtain walls, sports equipment, and electronic products with transparent shells.

The transparent makeup shell of the ecstasy has become a classic in the use of PC materials.

Especially protective glasses: light weight, high strength, can withstand the impact of steel balls with a diameter of 6 mm at a speed of 45 m/s. The shell of the lamp in the place where explosion-proof (vandal-proof) is required is also made of PC. (Mine/Prison)

In the design of electronic products, the shell materials have been used too much metal and colorful plastic shells, and the appearance of similar products is seriously homogeneous, but transparent materials still seem to be a blank field, but if users can see the internal structure of the product, the workmanship and materials inside the transparent shell must be exquisite, which is also a challenge to the product cost and overall design.

“High-end electronic products”

Electronics with polycarbonate materials as the housing are extremely dimensionally stable even when used outdoors in environments with a wide range of temperature differences. At the same time, it has good weather resistance and is not easy to change color, especially the glass fiber reinforced material, which can give the product excellent protection performance. For products with fire protection requirements, you can choose a grade with flame retardant characteristics, which can reach the fire rating of UL94-V0 level.

The 5C shell is made of colorful polycarbonate material, which has a warm and soft touch and colorful colors, and the side button holes are machined and formed by CNC machining.

The Lumia 800, the first Windows Phone in the Nokia Lumia series, has a look inspired by the polycarbonate monobloc setup of the Nokia N9, with the addition of three buttons on the front that Windows Phone requires.

“Disadvantages”

Compared with similar engineering materials, the price is higher, and due to the poor flow characteristics of the material after hot melting, the injection molding process is more difficult, so polycarbonate has higher requirements for the injection molding process.

When the material temperature is low, it will cause a lack of material, the surface is dull, and the silver wire is disordered;

When the temperature is high, the edge overflows, the silver wire dark strip appears, and the plastic parts are discolored and blistered. Mold temperature has a great impact on the quality of plastic parts, thin-walled plastic parts should take 80~100 °C, thick-walled plastic parts should take 80-120 °C, low mold temperature shrinkage, elongation, impact strength is large, bending, compressive and tensile strength is low, mold temperature more than 120 °C plastic parts cool slowly, easy to deform and stick to the mold, difficult to demould, long forming cycle.

If you use PC to make food containers, it is recommended not to fill them with boiling water or direct sunlight.

Under normal circumstances, PC water bottles will use food-grade PC, but substandard products or products that pursue low prices may release the risk of PBA.
